ARC Readers Vs Street Teams (They’re Not The Same)
OMG that is probably the best twist in a retelling ever! I love that so much! On a side note I wanted to apologize again for how I worded my question yesterday. I should not have implied that your retellings are not your own and instead said stories that don’t include “touch stones” because that is what I meant. Overall I just wanted to say i am really sorry and I hope this experience will help me chose my words more wisely
Thank you! I thought it was a fun twist! And it's okay, I wasn't upset, there's just a lot of bias against retelling authors, so it was a teaching moment for people who don't follow my retellings education as closely as you do ;)
@@KMRobinsonBooksthat makes sense.
What about stories that are "inspired" by fairytales? Do they also count as retellings or is there a different name for them?
Retellings have to have all the touchstones of the original worked into it. Here's a great free masterclass explaining retellings: ua-cam.com/play/PLuCHOUEv909eTVJO7Iz6bVxrrlEKnTqU1.html Anything that doesn't have the main points of the original stories isn't a retelling and shouldn't ethically be connected to the original fairytales at all, even if they have tiny hints at them ;) They're just normal stories with some similarities.
Even Photoshop uses Gen AI. If I mark a part of my cover and have Gen AI improve the lightning, through Photoshop, then the cover is now officially Gen AI created?
If you're using generative ai in any form, meaning the ai is creating something that wasn't there, then it is an ai cover, and as the laws are right now, it negates any copyright protection you have over the cover. We are, of course, seeing new cases go to litigation and new rulings happening, so we predict we'll have to have some clearer specifications on his in the next few years, but as of right now, using generative ai negates copyright and does have to be disclosed on the printer/distributor sites.
thanks ♥
you're welcome
What got you interested in doing retellings instead of something 100% yours?
It is 100% my own. Doing retellings is much harder than writing a story with no rules. Retellings are the equivalent of writing any other story but with the mandate of also having to write in a red ball, a stream, seven smooth stones, a watermelon, and a paperclip and making it make sense. Non-retellings have it super easy in that you get to make everything up to suit what you need. People tend to speak down to retellings authors as if they haven't created their own story, but they've done much more than authors who aren't beholden to writing in specific, random things to make it make sense. I like to correct the problems with the original stories, or more so, correct people's weird portrayals of those stories (ex: Goldilocks always having white blonde hair instead of golden hair) I've also written tons of books that aren't retellings ;)
@@KMRobinsonBooksIm sorry. I didn’t mean to Imply your retellings weren’t your own, a retelling is after all making a story your own, I just meant stories that didn’t have any “touch stones” from stories we know. You are right that retellings are much harder to write because you have to add elements that other authors don’t have to (although I think they are also more fun). I hope my Peter Pan retelling show cases that.
I thought it was just a masquerade ball so he never saw her face. Great story.
Some people use a masquerade to make it make sense in their stories ;) That's a very popular and well known method!
*Question:* when you say “over arching theme” do you mean that that they just have one element in common (your ex: technology) and that’s it or do you mean that each story is a “puzzle piece” to one overall story? I hope this makes sense
Element in common ;)
@@KMRobinsonBooksthank you!
How many retellings have you done and have you retold the original story in a different book?
I've written a very large number of retellings and quite a few that aren't published yet.
@@KMRobinsonBooksthat’s so cool!
Thank you, this has been immensely helpful. 🙏🏽
Happy to help! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’m guessing you are an author based on your passion for this issue. UA-cam is full of channels doing book readings. I’m curious how many copyright cases have been litigated against small channels doing book readings by publishers and authors? And of those how many have been successfully litigated? The music industry for years has tried to grapple with copyright issues; some successful some not. But one thing that has emerged is the concept of alterations or transformative works. If a book is written, obviously someone can’t just copy the enter text and publish it as their own since that would be a blatant copyright violation. However, if someone is taking a written copy, and then speaking the copy out loud, or even further, acting the parts of the text out loud, that sounds like a transformation from written to verbal content. Does it not?
I’d advise watching the episode again as this was all very clearly covered😉
I didn't know that. But I only use Immersive Translate to help me translate some foreign novels that I'm interested in, but I don't share them with others or publish them publicly.
I love a good villain retelling or the villain gets a happy ever after or when the villain gets the girl. So far i have three books. #1 and 2 both come from the Villain Ever After collection. 1. The prince and the sea witch by A G Marshall 2. Dark king and the eternal dance by alesha adamson 3. Magic of the Lamp by Lorele Johnson Plus two anthologies center on villains. One is called Villainous an anthology of fairytales retellings by K. A. Miltimore and second is called Blood from Stone by K. M. Robinson. I like the majority of stories in those anthologies.
Villain POV is my favorite “trope” of retellings! Also you mentioned YA and age being a factor that determines this…is there other elements one should consider when writing a YA?
Can you read public domain books (books that have expired copyrights) on UA-cam?
We discussed this in the video, give it another watch 😉
Thank you so much for this. I was going to be scammed just today. I was excited that a publisher reached out to me after they requested for manuscripts. Which I submitted. I was glad that I got international publishing only for them to be asking for £10,000. Thank you so much for this.
Oh wow, that's definitely a scam. Run fast and run far!
Your twist on The Little Mermaid sounds super cool although I never thought of the story (Hans Christian Andersen, not Disney although I feel the same way) as her “giving up her legs for a man” but rather to gain a soul and just so happens to fall in love along the way. Also I wanted to thank you for making these videos because I’m FINALLY starting my own book, a Peter Pan retelling (although I’m having trouble writing the opening sequence but it’s a start)
I never thought of it as giving up her legs for a man either...at least not in the Disney version, Han kind ran with it lol...but when the masses cry out about something, it's always a good thing to leverage in a retelling ;) Happy writing! Give yourself permission to skip the first chapter and jump straight in on chapter 2 so you can get going and you can write chapter 1 once the rest of the book is written and you know your characters super well and can give them a really strong start.
@@KMRobinsonBooksthank you, I will do that
Wow! Such an eloquent and professional interviewer and a very informative author.
Glad you enjoyed the episode, thanks for letting us know!
I made this mistake when I was in middle school and was writing a book and you are right…I never finished it. But now I got a new idea that I really like and feel that I can make into a story (even if the first draft is clunky) *Q:* i know you have written retellings so I wanted to ask, how much of the original can you put in your book without it seeming like you are copying the characters lives too much (ex: Captain Hook from Peter Pan going to Elton College before going to neverland, names of characters in the original story outside of Peter and Hook)
Here's a playlist with a master class on writing retellings: ua-cam.com/play/PLuCHOUEv909eTVJO7Iz6bVxrrlEKnTqU1.html
@@KMRobinsonBooksthank you!
What's the use, if I'm trying to protect my identity, why must I leave anything that would let someone against me find me?
Let's think practically about what could happen if people were allowed to just claim to be anyone without it somewhere connecting back to them. If an author did something bad like plagiarism...how would the person that was hurt by it get compensation? Think about taxes. The government needs to know who you actually are, even if the general public does not. It has to at some point go back to a real human so that there's accountability and the ability to track actions.
I'm more than willing to pay paperback prices for ebooks BUT there is NO WAY I can afford to pay the same price as a HARDCOVER! I went to ebooks for the convenience; I kept to paperbacks for affordability. If ebooks reflect Hardcover prices, the author will loose me!! It's unfortunate, cause that's the way a couple of my favorites are headed.
It’s tough out there because there’s so much piracy that force price jumps. Many authors lose thousands of dollars every month and end up making pennies because of how bad the problem is.
I want to turn my channel into a reading from books, articles, blogs or news print channel. Is possible any at all and how do I go about it?
Are of that is super illegal. You would have to pay (a lot) of money to license each individual piece you’d want to read and it would be very unlikely you’d monetize enough to cover the licensing fees when you eventually get monetized. I’d strongly recommend picking something else.
How about if I am reading a book that hadn’t been published in another language and I have translated it (I’m trilingual and do translation and localisation work so I have a few authors who have given me permission but would like to expand)
If you’re translating books, that’s serious violations (unless you were hired by the copyright owner to do so) Absolutely do not do this unless you’re under written contract. Definitely don’t read them in any video/livestream/audio/etc without a license. If you’re translating without being hired to, that’s multiple violations and some serious fines you don’t want to mess with. If, however, you can get hired to translate, that’s a pretty great gig that pays pretty well, so if you’re interested in that and can get in with some publishers, it might be worth your time.
Wow! I didn't know fonts were so legalistic. Thanks! Good info. Adobe is the way to go.
Fonts are the same as art, or books, or anything else people create😉😉 That’s why it’s especially important to use a cover designer who is an actual professional and not just someone who said “I can photoshop, let me make money making book covers” lol
Thank you. I fully agree with your suggestion for having a dedicated space. It's been critical for me in getting my work (all types) done. A question though. I write science-fiction and I sometimes need to do a lot of research into the science aspects of my stories. Do you have any suggestions on how to incorporate this into what should be your "writing" time?
I write sci-fi too and definitely get the research aspect of it! So it depends entirely on the situation. If it's a quick look up, I will pause writing and Google it. I'll give myself ten minutes if I need to do a deeper dive or if I get curious. If it's not a huge plot point and it's just pushing the story forward, I need to know enough to include it and move on. If it's a big deal in the story, then I'll set aside special extra research time. This could mean giving up some Netflix time to accommodate it. I'll do whatever I have to learn what I need to move forward. If it's something I need a special skill set for, I find a person and do an interview with them to ask my questions. Ultimately, writing time is writing time. If you need to do research, that's not on writing time. If you're a plotter, you should spend a day researching all the things before you write. If you're a pantser, you're going to have to give up free time to accommodate your research needs. But for the vast majority of research, it should be a simple 5-10 Google search and then get back to writing ;)
@@KMRobinsonBooks Thanks. Most of my research requires a lot of time, so I'll keep my "writing" time as just for writing. Question. What's "pantser"?
Plotter = plans out every step of book before writing Planster = knows main stepping stones but figures out the smalls steps and transitions as they write Panster = figures it out all as they're writing with no plot points in mind before (as in flying by the seat of their pants...panster)
I see that rules changed in regards swearing/ spicy scenes - how far is it possible to push this while monetizing? I see a lot of audiobooks which say "edited to comply with UA-cam rules" but these were all published before the rule change. I write paranormal romance (and there is swearing, and a couple of open door sex scenes - while the sex scenes would be easy to edit out, the swearing less so). Any clues?
Sex scenes are 100% out. They allow limited swearing, any of the "worse" words would need to be removed for sure. You can't be monetized if you swear within the first bit of your videos (here's a video on my channel where I teach about tiktok/instagram/UA-cam: ua-cam.com/users/shortse2QvywtlrOs) As an actual UA-cam expert that speaks on stages globally about social media content creation, I would say you should remove any open-door sex scenes and 80-90% of the language if you want to be monetized. Most advertisers will not pay to run ads against videos with explicit content, and those they do will pay far less to run those ads, so by leaving it in, you're cutting yourself out of a lot of money.
*Question:* I’m thinking of writing a book series where each book is based on one of the twelve days of Christmas. Each mystery seems totally separate but by the end of each book the detectives are anonymously invited to a house where they meet the other detectives to solve one case that connects them all. Is this possible or should I just have each book be completely separate from each other with no overlap? Would that still be a series?
Oh that sounds awesome! I love that idea! You can totally do that. It's no problem to have series follow different characters in the same world. You might actually want to start with the final mystery where they're all together and then do the follow up books as how each character wound up in the big mystery so fans of the first character don't have to wait until book 13 to see them again....or you could use it to wrap-up the entire series. If you do, you definitely want to give some sneak peeks into the final group mystery at the end of each book and let readers collect clues to help with the final story. It's definitely still a a series even if it's standalone within the series. I would just straight up call it a series, but you could also call it a shared World Series. @@KMRobinsonBooksthank you so much! Hopefully it turns out well
@@KMRobinsonBooks *Question:* what are 12 elements that I can have the detectives find out to solve the group mystery? (I already have the suspect, victims name, murder weapon, location of murder, time of murder & alibi). I want each detective to have found one element within their respective books I hope this makes sense and sorry for the multiple questions
@@moviemelody2210 You're always welcome to ask questions, however, for this specific one, the answer is: you have to write your own book, no one else can or should be doing it or you ;) It's on you to figure that out and bringing other people into it can cause you a lot of issues later on, especially if the books are published. If you're struggling to think of your elements, that means it's time to hire a developmental editor to help you. Dev editors do lots of cool things from sit down and help you plan and plot your book (what you're asking here) to reading through your completely book and helping you tighten it up, remove unnecessary things, add in important things, and make it overall more sellable. If you're struggling with your plot points as you mentioned, it might be time to hire someone to help. I do this professionally if you're interested in working with me, but there are tons of other fabulous dev editors out there that can help you too if you resonate with them more!
@@KMRobinsonBooksthanks for the feedback, I actually was able to figure it out myself
I’m currently writing my first short story. I plan on publishing it when it’s fully finished and edited. Your videos have been very helpful! Thank you for what you do!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching and commenting!
That’s terrible that your friend would do that to you.
Jealousy is a wild thing, sadly. I wish all the best for her, but I'm glad to have gone our separate ways.
not only on facebook- but very thank your for this video, just came by accident across it and it helped me rn to simply block someone who stuck to me and I avoided them but never got to block them and finally did it. thanks for the strength!
Glad to hear it! It can feel so harsh or confrontational to protect ourselves online, but it's so, so important.
This is why I've decided to write under pen names.
So glad to find you. Thomas Covenant series by Steven Donaldson, a close second is the Terry Brooks series the Sword Of Shannara.
Glad you're here!
Love this! I've been using them in stickers. I hadn't thought out setting up character profiles on the the book pages. I do need to use them on socials. Would love to hear other ways to use art.
I'm working on some fun new ways to use MY character art...keep your eyes peeled on my TikTok/Instagram!
If you're going to bring this to light, it might be beneficial to new authors to know who you are talking about. Giving the publisher anonymity helps the publisher.
I am protecting the authors that are still dealing with the fall out of this-it's industry standard for those that work with the underground movement helping authors impacted by this kind of thing. As everyone who follows me knows, I have an open inbox policy for people who have had contracts offered to them to come check to see what I know about that publisher since I've worked with and had connections to so many over the years so they don't end up in a bad spot. You're also welcome to do a very basic Google search as there's lots of information about the *many* publishers that have pulled this over the last decade.
@KMRobinsonBooks thanks for information. It's geared towards American writers so not sure if you can answer. I've been trying to research this but everything seems to be American...I'm Canadian. If I have a copyright for my name in Canada...is that recognised worldwide or only in Canada? Do I have to have a copyright for every country?
I do not own the books but i do upload free public domain books from Librovix . Will i still get monetized or should i just make 3 lengthy videos that does not include Audiobooks? I have reached 1000+ subs, 4000hrs already . My concern is that will i have to reapply just because I used audiobooks from Librovix public domain material? Should i remove them altogether and lean on my other videos that are not Audiobook content based?
Thank you for the tips on placing the book 📕 on permafree 😊
Permafree has worked wonders for my career!
So far only once😂 it's true I meant to throw it at the author too... Just missed by a few continents
My biggest problem is usually how the character develops after hardship tbh😕
Where do I get public domain books
catalog.loc.gov/
What about reading Greek literature written 2000 years ago and published penguin?
Go find an older version that is public domain. Penguin has a copyright on their version.

This was so fun! Thank you for having me!
Thanks for joining me!!
What if the copyright claimant is dead?
Just like with everything else, it passes on to next of kin/whoever they left it to/their estate/etc. It doesn't magically go away. You're responsible for tracking the new copyright holder down.
Thank you so much. One more question for you... I am a new content creator- many big tarot/ oracle card channels show and use cards by deck creators and read the excerpts in the booklets that are included w/the deck. I also do this. Many have built very successful channels and are monetizing videos by doing this on UA-cam. Is this also a copyright issue? The whole niche may be in trouble if that is the case. thoughts?@@KMRobinsonBooks
I hope you do make the follow-up video.
I did! The second episode released yesterday and episode 3 is in a few days!
@@KMRobinsonBooks Thanks! I will look for it. I'm following your channel and turned on the notification bell but about 2 weeks ago, I stopped getting notifications when you post new videos. :(
Oh that's so frustrating, I'm so sorry it's not telling you! I release new full length videos every single day at 1pm est so there's new content daily. I release Shorts content (their version of TikTok under 60 seconds) as applicable, but usually around 6pm est on days I have one to post.
Spending money for quality covers is great advice. I'd say after that, paying for editing is essential too. I think it's challenging to read self published work if it's also self edited, or they had a friend help edit. Paying an editor is totally different and is essential!
Covers absolutely matter, as does editing ;)
🖤 keep going
Is it OK to copyright my book and to hire a copyright Attorney AFTER my book has already been selling on Amazon?
Yes
Can u add some tips on how to start this UA-cam channel as reading aloud some books/ stories... thanks a lot
Well, as we said, it's pretty much impossible to have a book reading channel because you'd have to have a ridiculously high amount of money to be able to afford the licenses for that. But if you want to learn to grow a UA-cam channel that is not that, I have full playlists on UA-cam.com/kmrobinson
So I have been writing an urban fantasy novel for the last four years in college. I have written close to four drafts and the entire story and characters are of my own creation. So if I use chatgpt or any other form of AI to check the grammer or further polish my prose/dialogue, that would be considered as AI Assisted content right? If so, do I need to inform my publishers about it?
Grammarly/ProWritingAid is assistive. KDP does not require that to be disclosed. Publishers all have their own policies on what you must disclose to them (they will not allow AI...most won't care about assistive spell check, but you have to read their policies before submitting to them to know....and when in doubt, just say no ai used to create story, only to spell check)
What does one get paid for a dry run as a beginner?
As a beginner beginner, you’ll likely have to do some for free and extremely little to get examples under your belt. Then for awhile you’ll be making very low end because you’re still new. Once you have a lot of work, then you can charge higher prices. So if voice acting isn’t really really what you want to do, this is not a good space to get into because it will take a good chunk of time to build up to making it worth your effort. And also remember you have to invest in all the equipment up front, and that’s a lot out of pocket.
